About the event

Introduction:

[Attend this free History Talk in-person or online (read more below to find out how to participate in this event online)].

Celestial bodies and events have fascinated mankind since the beginning of recorded human history. Among the many astronomical phenomena, the one that has always stood out as a spectacle is the solar eclipse. On April 8th, 2024, Western New York will experience a total solar eclipse not seen in the region since 1925 (and in Fluvanna, and other localities within southern Chautauqua County, not witnessed since 1806).

Once this year's eclipse is over, we will not see another total solar eclipse in Western New York until the year 2144. So this upcoming once in a lifetime event is bedazzling people across North America!

Eclipse History Talk:

Western New York's total eclipse has caught the eye of not only astronomers but layfolk as well. To make this event more enlightening, we're holding a special History Talk scheduled to take place at 10:00 AM on March 25th, at the Fluvanna Church. We'll learn about solar eclipses from a historical point of view, in addition to getting a better understanding of how eclipses work, what you may experience on April 8, 2024 and steps you can take to safely view the eclipse.

Attend the History Talk In-Person or Oneline:

Everyone's welcome to attend this event in-person or online. To join the Eclipse History Talk online, at 10:00 AM on April 8th, simply click the "Join Live Video" link at the bottom of the confirmation page that you received when you RSVP'd for the event. Alternatively, if you added the event via Google, iCal or Outlook to your electronic calendar, using the links on the RSVP confirmation webpage or email, the link to join the event will be in your calendar appointment. If you need any assistance joining online, feel free to contact us at ContactUs@FluvannaHistory.com.

FREE Solar Eclipse Glasses:

Last but not least, we are giving away Solar Eclipse Glasses at the History Talk that you can use to enhance your eclipse viewing experience. These Solar Eclipse Glasses meet the standards set by ISO to safely view the sun during a solar eclipse (ISO 12312-2). Thanks to the generosity of Chautauqua County and the following the guidance provided by the County Health Director (our very own Lacey Wilson) you, your friends, family and loved ones can view the solar eclipse confident that the glasses meet the highest safety standards.

Co-sponsored by the Marshal Martz Memorial Astronomical Association, Inc. (MMMAA), this Talk will be led by NASA Eclipse Ambassador, MMMAA Vice President and experienced amateur astronomer, Tom Traub. Free of charge and open to the public, RSVP to save your spot, view the event online and reserve your Solar Eclipse Glasses.
